Today, some of the most popular devices in our society are connected by WiFi. These devices include mobile phones as well as many of our other devices. At the same time, there are limitations with this technology.

LiFI is a new form of technology for transmitting data that keeps your information secure. However, what exactly is LiFI?

SO, What is LiFi Technology?

German engineer Harald Haas first proposed the idea for a bright future, called LiFI, at TED Conference in 2011.

LiFI technology uses visible light and ultraviolet and infrared lights to communicate with one another.

What is this supposed to mean? It could’ve transmitted the data to wherever light of this type could reach. How is it possible? It’s easier than it looks.

For example, the LED lights may be able to be turned on and off ten billion times per second. That is much faster than any human could perceive it. As a result, the transition between “on” and “off” could be translated into binary code, which would yield speeds of 10 Gbps.

Digital products like LiFI technology have an upper hand in many ways over traditional products. This can be good, but it also has its drawbacks.

PROs and CONs — LiFi Technology

Jeroen van Gils, CEO of LiFi.co detailed for us some helpful information about LiFi Technology.

He explains, LiFi technology has a number of advantages and disadvantages. Its speed would be much faster than that of Wi-Fi, transmitting up to 10-20 Gbps. It may even become faster in the future.

A disadvantage is that it can’t penetrate walls, but sensors could help overcome this function. Another advantage is that LiFi could be used in places with sensitive electronics like airplanes or hospitals without causing interference. The range is also 5-10 meters, but as with overcoming obstacles, sensors can also help increase transmission distance.

A more subtle advantage is that while the EM spectrum used by Wi-Fi technology may become saturated, the visible light spectrum (10,000 greater) will not do so anytime soon.

Another advantage is that it wouldn’t have to have lights at a level perceptible to humans in order to transmit data; it could use the lights at a lower intensity to operate non-visibly. Finally, it would theoretically be cheap for them to implement Lifi technology; all they would need is modulators for the lights and receivers for devices themselves.

Just because something hasn’t been massively implemented doesn’t mean there isn’t a good reason for it.

How close are we to using LiFi Internet ?

Jeroen — The truth is, this is a promising technology, but it’s still in its early stages. It’s expected that the standard will be published and the first associations dedicated to its dissemination will be formed in the coming months. Not only that, but both technical and economic factors will come into play.

Supporters of mesh networking claim that it can improve current Wi-Fi technology and, in some cases, live on its own by providing wireless service where a network is unavailable or weak. Detractors, on the other hand, find a lot of faults with its limited range and slow speeds when compared to current networks.

One of the biggest issues LiFi developers advocate is that infrastructure needs would be reduced. Whether we’re using LiFi technology or Wi-Fi, there will always be some kind of infrastructure to monitor, right?
